When Jesus said this He was in Jerusalem and the Pharisees were after Him. They thought this claim as blasphemy and wanted to kill Him. How sad they had become so entrenched in their version of law that they were blind to truth.
Do you know any harsh legalists? The Pharisees were just like that. How sad! Legalists miss out on freedom. Jesus came to set us free from legalism to faith in Him. This is a massive swap. Here you go from depending on your own righteousness to knowing it is filthy rags, and to depending on Christ alone.
In one sense you are free, free from the burden of self-effort to the continual rejection of self. It takes time to be totally free, and trusting in Jesus. Then any works we do are a result of faith. Amen!
