“He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”Malachi 4:6 NIV
Jesus said John the Baptist was Elijah, even though John denied it. Perhaps John was being humble and Jesus as the greater bestowed honour on him.
People did come to repentance when John preached. We have no record that parents and children were restored. However, we know Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for their neglect of their parents. For the treatment of John and Jesus destruction did come upon Jerusalem when the Romans destroyed the temple and many were killed in the Jewish uprising in 66AD. History record over 1 million Jews were killed and 70,000 were taken to Rome to build the colosseum.
The book of Revelation speaks of another Elijah type (Rev 11:1-14) along with another, perhaps a Moses type. Again the world persecuted these two witnesses, they died but rose again after three days. They are able to call down fire on their enemies. They will be fearsome.
