Grafted in

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬ ‭NLT‬‬ By laying down my ‘rights’ to live as I choose, I am allowing the Holy Spirit to guide, reprove and train me in all godliness.  In chapter 11 Paul discussed the fact that the Jews failed to believe and therefore we Gentiles have the opportunity to be grafted into the tree, which is represented by Abraham who believed God and was righteous before Him. We are reminded that the Jews were blinded by unbelief until the full number of Gentiles have come in.  This does not mean that God has forsaken them, He still loves them. They are His chosen people. However we Gentiles are grafted in and become His loved ones. This does not mean we can live for ourselves and treat His gift lightly. He is able to remove us as well. Our task is to li...

The headwaters

“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” ‭‭Habakkuk‬ ‭2‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬ Right now, in this day, a vast awakening to God is underway. People are coming to Him in record numbers. I sense this prophesy is coming to pass. This is so good! I am praying into this space. Lately I have had two dreams, very vivid dreams. In the first I was watching my daughter who was a business woman. Her heart was hard towards God. Her focus was worldly wealth. The Lord had decided it was time for her to come back to Him. She was on the bank of a river watching a black boat, in which she had just placed all her treasure. The black boat capsized and was lost, rather than repent she ranted and raved at the captain of the boat. I saw a hard heart, and sensed that same heart was in me. It caused me to repent and ask for forgiveness that I might have been the cause of her hard heart. In the second dream I was a married woman. I was on a bank looking down ...

Faith is..

“Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.” Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Faith is a gift given to each of us to use in our relationship with the Lord. Many do not use it, they misunderstand it and rely too much on their own hand. Faith must be stepped into. If we read the gospels and do a word search where Jesus said: ‘you faith has made you whole’, we discover instances where people did something in their contact with Jesus. They came, they touched Him in Faith, they refused to be silenced. For me faith is just that, I must step into it. I must pursue the prize in faith. I have done this with my health, my finances my relationships. Self-pity had to be destroyed first. All offense, all self-help and wrong attitudes and focus on Jesus and His provision. There is one area I am constantly challenged, my hearing. However, I have stepped into relationships with people, creating space for people to belong. I love on them and make them welcome. I re...

The author of peace

“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭19‬:‭38‬ ‭NIV‬‬ These words were spoken by Jesus’ disciples as He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The Pharisees chastised Him and said, “teacher rebuke your followers for saying such things”. Jesus responded, “  “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” Luke‬ ‭19‬:‭40‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Imagine that! Stones crying out their praise. Only in cartoons would you expect stones to have a voice. Yet, their creator knew something we didn’t. Nothing is impossible to God. The words the disciples used were from Psalms 118:26 and implied that Jesus was the Messiah, which He was and is. The Pharisees thought they had the authority to determine who was the Messiah and who was not. However, because they could not recognise God’s divine provision, they lost all authority. Prince of Peace

“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.” Isaiah‬ ‭9‬:‭2‬ ‭NLT‬‬ This prophetic word was given by Isaiah about Galilee. At the time of the prophesy the land was under Assyrian oppression. However, the prophesy goes on to speak about the coming Messiah. The Christian world love to use this verse in regard to missions, and indeed the Lord may use it to speak hope into the heart of the missionary about the people they were sent to. For me, a missionary, I claim them. However, the chapter is more than this, it is about our saviour. Verse 6 begins to describe Him: For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government shall be upon His shoulders. He will be named wonderful counsellor, mighty God, eternal father, prince of peace. Jesus is the light that shines in darkness. He is the answer, the way, the truth and the life. Bones safe

“The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time. For the Lord protects the bones of the righteous; not one of them is broken!” Psalms‬ ‭34‬:‭19‬-‭20‬ ‭NLT‬‬ I am made righteous through Jesus’ sacrifice, it has nothing to do with my own efforts. I am grateful for Jesus. By His grace I am redeemed. I am set free from the works of the law and the struggle to be right with God. Rather I surrender my efforts and accept His perfect sacrifice. Today Australia remembers the men and women who served during the wars. It is Anzac Day. Nepal is steeped in protests against the government who the people deem to be wicked. The sacrifices made in war epitomise the sacrifice Jesus made. However, as we are a sinful lot our sacrifices are not perfect and cannot save mankind from the effects of sin. Planting and watering

“It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭7‬-‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬ In this chapter Paul is dealing with favouritism. Paul had pioneered the work in Corinth and Apollos had presumably pastored the work. Some were saying, “we belong to Apollos”, others, “we belong to Paul”. Paul is emphasising that the important one is God, He produces the growth. Paul goes on to say that both the one who plants and the one who waters must do the job not according to man but to God. Each will be rewarded on the last day when their works will be tested by fire. What is down in the flesh will be destroyed, but what is down in the Spirit will stand. The Lord has been working in me to know this accountability. The ...

God’s will

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” 1 John‬ ‭5‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬ Do you hear people pray: “God if it is your will please heal aunty Betty”. We do not need to pray like that with regard to healing. Jesus paid the price for all our diseases. Isaiah 53:5 says  “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Peter said:  ““He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬ Then why are some people not healed? I do not know. However, I do know that all who came to Jesus for healing went away healed. The fact that some go away I healed does not compute that it was not God’s will to heal them. For myself I am constantly battling to step into divine health and refuse to accept sickne...

Propitiation?

“God presented Him as a propitiation through faith in His blood, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His restraint God passed over the sins previously committed.” Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭25‬ ‭HCSB‬‬ Propitiation is a big word and one we do not use, except in scripture and except when talking about forgiveness of sin and usually the Old Testament. The mercy seat, the place on top of the ark of the covenant in the holiest of holiest in the Jewish temple, was where the blood of animals was sprinkled to atone for the sins of the people. This scripture presents Jesus as the sacrificed lamb who atoned (paid for) our sins. Jesus’ sacrifice made a way for forgiveness of all sin for all time, past, present and future. When I came to Christ He forgave all my sins, those that weighed me down in my past, those I would do now and in the future. Sin is something we do easily until trained to walk in holiness and His righteousness. We do this by faith not self- effort. When we come to Jesus He gives us...

Firstborn

“No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭16‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬ This is a beautiful reference to Jesus and the the fact that God would not allow His holy One to rot in a grave. Peter includes this verse in his first sermon in Acts 2:25–36. It is amazing, and encouraging to me that prophesy can be included in a simple, heartfelt prayer. How good is our God that He works in our lives in such a beautiful way. This Easter has been my best yet. In a land that does not celebrate Easter as a whole, we expats are able to celebrate Jesus without Easter eggs and the western corruption of the season. We did have hot cross buns, though made with love by a South African couple. My flatmates and I did 5 Lenten studies leading up to Easter and yesterday three little children in our block of flats heard the Easter story and received a hot cross bun. 10,000 people from church a...

Overcomes

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John‬ ‭16‬:‭33‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Today many will be suffering. Suffering from torture, suffering from isolation, suffering from rejection, and persecution. Some many suffer from illness, or mental disease. However, Jesus tells us, have heart, I have overcome the world and all it dishes out.  Jesus said these words before He went to the cross, before He was brutally beaten and crucified. He said it in the past tense. What did He mean? Jesus had resisted sin, remained the pure and perfect lamb that was about to be slain. In giving Himself, He conquered over Satan’s hold on us. No matter what comes against us we can have peace and victory in Him. We can take His victory and stand today knowing that eternity is ours because of Jesus! A day of grief

“I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.” John‬ ‭16‬:‭20‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Today, for me is a quiet day. Yesterday we experienced the horrors of the crucifixion, tomorrow the joy of resurrection, but today is quiet and filled with reflection. The horror story of Good Friday was terrifying for the disciples. They had lost their dream, their rabbi. They had plans, great plans, but today they lie in the dust. We can have periods of intense grief, losing one loved dearly, but joy will come. The place they occupied is empty, but a new thing is coming. The emptiness hurts. The disciples had walked, talked and lived with Jesus. He was brutally taken away. This day was filled with pain and sorrow. The pain is real. It was real for the disciples. It was redefining them. In their minds nothing would stop them, they would conquer the earth. However, today their plans ar...

The sacrifice

“No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” John‬ ‭15‬:‭13‬ ‭HCSB‬‬ Jesu passed men dying on crosses as He went into Jerusalem. He saw the brutality of the Roman crucifixion and knew what was before Him. The horror of it caused Him to pray, not once, but three times, “Father if it is possible let this cup pass from Me!” Yet in humble obedience He endured the cross knowing that it is why He had come, so that we could be made free and reunited to the Father. Isaiah wrote, ‘It please God to crush Him severely, yet when you make Him a restitution offering He will see His seed…Is 53:10). I was discussing this verse with my Nepali flatmates last night and Martha gave me a short video clip to watch. I will share it. It helped me see that it was not actual pleasure as we know pleasure, it was a necessary sacrifice. Living bread

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” ‭‭John‬ ‭6‬:‭51‬ ‭NIV‬‬ This verse encapsulates what and who Jesus was. He was God, He came down from heaven to live among men for 33 years. 30 of those years were in obscurity to men. Three of those years turned the religious world upside down. Jesus calls Himself living bread. Just as we eat food everyday, He invites us to eat of Him, all that He represented. He then tells us, “whoever eats of this bread will live forever”. Then He explains that ‘this’ bread is His flesh, which He would give ‘for the life of the world’. Jesus was about to be crucified for all mankind for all eternity. He was the perfect sacrifice, pure and undefined. His sacrifice freed us from the power and defilement of sin. Fruit than remains

“I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation that will produce the proper fruit.” Matthew‬ ‭21‬:‭43‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Jesus had another tangle with the chief priests and elders in the temple. They had demanded to know ‘by  what authority are you doing these things?’ Jesus responded, as He often did with a few parables. He then went on to tell them the above verse. Now, of course, the leaders thought Jesus was the problem and they the righteous ones. Today, many in mainline churches are falling away with false doctrine. They have muddied the waters of the pure and true gospel with uncleanness. They are not bearing the fruit that Jesus is looking for. He is removing their lamp, so to speak. As we read the first few chapters in the book of  Revelation we see Jesus addressing the churches in Asia and the common warning was ‘walk the right way or I will remove your lamp!’ The religious leaders of Jesus’ day really thought they were on the right path and t...

His House

“He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!”” Matthew‬ ‭21‬:‭13‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Jesus said these words to the money changers and sellers of animals, spices etc in the Temple court. A place that should have been quiet was a busy bazar. I was reminded of this back in 1990’s. My husband and I were pastoring a new church in a place called Wyong NSW. We had purchased a building and converted it into a church. In my desire to have the people read I had taken books on consignment and set them up in the left front corner of the sanctuary in the building, in sight from the congregation. I knew my eyes were constantly drawn to the books instead of listening and partaking in the service and was convicted that what I had done was wrong.  Many churches today have coffee shops at some section of the church building. Here they sell food and drink. I am not saying they are wrong, I think the position of the books in...

Time to ponder

Why Do We Turn Away From God’s Mercy? As Jesus gazed over Jerusalem, His heart broke. He longed to gather its people like a mother hen gathers her chicks—fragile, helpless, and in desperate need of care. But they didn’t want His care. It's tragic: the ones who most need mercy reject it. Throughout history, God had sent prophets to guide his people, and they killed them. By the end of Holy Week, they would kill Jesus too—the ultimate prophet and the source of their salvation. Why do we turn away from God’s mercy? Often, it’s because we struggle to believe it’s for us. In our world, mercy feels foreign—too good to be true. But Jesus doesn’t operate like the world. In this verse, we see that offering mercy is His deepest longing. The cross reveals just how far He’s willing to go to ensure we get what we don’t deserve—His love, grace, and forgiveness—and don’t get what we do deserve—death. The crowd

““Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”” Matthew‬ ‭21‬:‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬ Today is Palm Sunday. It is the Sunday that begins Holy Week, when we remember all that unfolded that fateful week in Jesus’ life. The verse above is first spoken in Zechariah. Israe at the time he wrote it was beaten down and needing deliverance. The king they hoped for was not what they received. Jesus came humbly riding on a donkey. He was not going to liberate Israel from the Romans, but rather from their sins. Today, many would like a genie in a bottle rather than a saviour who tells them, “take up your cross and follow me!” We want our problems solved, riches, ease and comfort. However, Jesus said, “if you do not take up your cross and follow Me, you cannot be My disciple!” Christianity is not ease, but rather that of a relationship with Him, allowing Him to be Lord and laying down our own rights to rule. “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬ I can agree with Paul here. I have learned to rough it as the Aussies would say. However, living in a tent or. Car would challenge me. My son is involved in outreach to these people in Brisbane, Australia. I also don’t think I’d like to use a rock as a pillow as Jacob had done. That would be a tad uncomfortable. Paul was the maker of tents and so I imagine he spent some time in these. I like tents when camping but as I age they are becoming uncomfortable. Yet, Paul was in chains in prison when he wrote this letter to the Phillipians. The discomfort he would have experienced would have been extreme. I understand that with Christ all things are possible. Jesus is the ingredient in contentment....

Workers

“Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” Matthew‬ ‭9‬:‭37‬-‭38‬ ‭NIV‬‬ What was Jesus doing when He said this statement? He was out in the harvest field preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing the sick. Scriptures says: “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Matthew‬ ‭9‬:‭36‬ ‭NIV‬‬ Compassion causes workers to go into the harvest field. Jesus was a man of compassion. As His family He invites us to share His burden. It is interesting that He said this to the disciples. They were following Him as their teacher and rabbi. They were happy to watch Him work. However, they would soon be thrust into the field and commissioned to also preach the gospel, heal the sick and cast out devils. We are not merely spectators. God’s sanctuary

“Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s sanctuary and that the Spirit of God lives in you?” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭HCSB‬‬ When I have a guest I make sure they have all they need. I feed them well and talk to them. Yet it is so easy to take the presence of God for granted. He is not just a guest, He is Lord of the manor. In the Old Testament when God came to live with the Israelites in the wilderness, to start with He was a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night. When He instructed Moses to build a tent temple He then was right in the midst of the people. Even they took Him for granted and complained. When Jesus came to earth and walked among us the people came to Him for healing, but few stayed for relationship. Even His disciples fell to arguing about who was the greatest among them when He was going through His greatest trials. Again and again they failed to act as if they had God living among them. No weapon

“But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken!”  Isaiah‬ ‭54‬:‭17‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Do we, do I believe this or not? If we say, “yes”, then why do we confess the things we do? “I have gout, I have high blood pressure, I have blah blah blah!” As we confess these things we make room for demons carrying sickness and disease. As we moan about who wronged us we create curses, as we talk little about Jesus we disempower His work in our lives. Conversely, as we speak scripture over our lives we empower the word of God to act in our lives. This scripture is full of power. Whilst it was spoken to one group of people many years ago, it applies to all God’s children. We can claim that power in our own lives. Anyone who speaks against us, plots against us will fail. No one else

“There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Peter says this on the day of Pentecost to the crowd that has assembled to hear the cause of the rushing wind and tongues of fire.  All the disciples had forsaken Jesus in His hour of need and trial, yet Jesus forgave them and pored out His Holy Spirit on them. They were used mightily when empowered by the Holy Spirit. No one else had come close to being like Jesus. Many rose and said, “follow me!” However, all died and stayed dead. Jesus rose from the grave. He poured out His Holy Spirit on the disciples and this same spirit turned uneducated men into bold preachers. No on else was able to transform humble fishermen into miracle workers. We are disappointed in people, continually. My latest is this morning. I needed medicine brought from Australia and the person who was to bring it, forgot. This is a trouble to me as in Nepal the cost is as...

Know Him

“I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!” Philippians‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬-‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬ Paul did indeed come to know Jesus and experience the power that raised Jesus from the dead. Eternally he is alive in Christ. However, whilst on the earth he suffered greatly for his faith: he was stoned, whipped, falsely accused, imprisoned, shipwrecked and more. He identified in Christ’s suffering. The Lord showed him what he would suffer for following Him, yet he proceeded. Many suffer, have suffered and will suffer. Jesus told us, “take up your cross and follow me!” Each of us has a cross. Each of us must choose to follow! Jesus also said, “he who finds his life will lose his life, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” The challenge we face is to try and ensure we do not suffer. It is not possible. My rest

“The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Exodus‬ ‭33‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬ This is an interesting verse. Moses, and God, are having trouble with the Israelites God told Moses to take from Egypt to the Promised Land. God had previously told Moses, “I am not going with you as these people are a stubborn and stiff necked people and if I go ai might just kill them all”. Not a good pronouncement! Moses countered this with, “well if you won’t come with me I’m not going )my paraphrase) these are Your people.” God relents and says he will go and give Moses rest. We tend to think rest is freedom from agitation, if you follow the story you find Moses had nothing but agitation from the people, and true to His word many people died at the Lord’s hand for their sinful behaviour. Therefore, what did God mean when He said He would give Moses rest? Perhaps it was rest from God saying He will not go, but perhaps, because Moses was a man of presence, he found rest in the midst...

The beginning

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬ ‭NLT‬‬ We live in an age where, because mankind has rejected this truth, their children now reject who they are. Little boys want to be girls and little girls want to be boys. Things have become so crazy because God has given them up to foolishness of the mind. Yet, I believe God did indeed create the earth and all that is in it. How glorious the mind that devises such beauty. When Inlook at a baby I wonder. The process of growth in the womb is spectacular.  We cannot see anything on this earth suddenly evolve from nothing. God created mankind in His image. In His likeness He formed us. We are tripartite beings. We are a spirit, we have a soul and we live in a body. The body will decay but the soul and spirit will live forever. God gave all things on the earth for us to enjoy. The animals He gave us to rule, the plants to tender. Nothing in all the earth is made like Him but mankind alone. We are His treasur...

Everything you do

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Cor 10:31 The verse is plucked out of a passage in which Paul is dealing with meat offered to idols. In a culture where idol worship was prevalent, Christians had to decide where to eat it or not. Paul was addressing the freedom we have to eat but not to offend. He said ‘if someone tells you it was offered to idols, don’t eat it so to not offend.’  He goes on to say: I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭ 33‬ ‭NLT‬‬ I am living in Nepal. I live in a house owned by idol worshippers. When they have their festivals they invite us to eat with them, however, as my flatmates are Nepali Christians and know the food is offered to idols, we do not go. Love

“Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew‬ ‭22‬:‭37‬-‭39‬ ‭NLT‬‬ We have heard the phrase, ‘love makes the world go round’, and it is right. However, the type of love that ensures the world’s continuity is God’s love. He holds all things together. It is His kind of love that Jesus was speaking about here also, a selfless love that gave up His only Son to die on a cross and free it from sin. We do not love God to manipulate Him, rather, we respond to His love in gratitude. Manipulative love is the worldly kind of love. It loves to get in return. God’s love loves because it is pure, kind, unprovoked, gentle and good. We are invited to love with this love. Now, you can say, “I can’t do that, I’m selfish to my core”. You would be right, as we all are. However, when we come to Christ He gives us His Holy Spirit ...

The first verse exhorts us to not forget all of the Lord’s benefits and then the following lists His benefits. David had amazing insight for a man who did not live under the outpouring of grace. He lists things that are ours in the New Testament: forgiveness of sin, healing, crowning with love and compassion, and he goes on to say that He satisfies our desires with good things. He understood we have a gracious and loving God. We need to draw near to our God and not our feelings about the problems in our world.
