Holy Spirit

Acts 2:1-4 (MSG) When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Without warning there was a sound like a strong wind, gale force—no one could tell where it came from. It filled the whole building. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them.

If we wait for Him, He will come. Not on our terms but His.

So often we pray directive prayers, He likes open prayers so He can surprise us.

I am sure the disciples did not expect the mighty rushing wind nor the tongues of fire or indeed the speaking of tongues.

On Saturday night I had dinner with a girlfriend who the Holy Spirit is wooing to Christ. She grew up in an atmosphere of law and she still struggles against it. Grace is foreign to her.

She wanted to know if I prayed in tongues as her previous religion had a dim view on that. She had come to church with me a few times and I am sure the preacher she liked most prayed in tongues as he ministered but she failed to notice.

I explained to my friend how tongues is not a legal requirement in my church, it is a gift after all and one that is a blessing. I explained how I often sing in the spirit as this is how I first encountered the Holy Spirit. Again she has never heard me but I have sung around her at some time.

The Holy Spirit comes to empower not to bind, aid, counsel, encourage, direct but not bind. Although His introduction to the scriptures is with huge fanfare He is not a dominating bully, He is very understated.

I am so grateful for the Holy Spirit, He is my best friend and rely on Him, He is my companion and my comforter. Amen!
