In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised in the Jordan by John. As soon as He came up out of the water, He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending to Him like a dove, and a voice came from heaven:
You are my beloved Son, I take delight in you. Mark 1:11
The words; 'My beloved Son', indicates the Son's uniqueness and recalls Abraham's love for his son Isaac. Only Israel and Israel's king were called God's son in the OT. The divine declaration in Mark 1:11 announced Jesus' eternal relationship to God. All three persons of the trinity were present as Jesus' baptism. (commentary-HCSB)
I personally love the words 'I take delight in You.' I want to hear the Lord say that to me. I delight in His will and Him more than anything and therefore I understand delight. You do not often hear a father say those words about a son but I know that it is felt by many.
What causes delight? For me it comes from a true appreciation of the one I delight in. The more I come to know Him the more I delight in His mind, His will and His ways.
The Father had watched Jesus grow up in his father's house and what he saw gave Him pleasure. The fact that Jesus walked in obedience gave Him pleasure. An obedient child is a delight. A self-willed and rebellious child is a problem and a drain.
So for my God to delight in me He needs to know He has my heart, and He has. Where He leads I will follow. He can be trusted, He is good. Amen!
