Angry Jesus

When Jesus saw her crying and the Jews who had come with her crying, He was angry in His spirit and deeply moved. "where have you put him?" He asked. "Lord" they told Him, "come and see." Jesus wept. John 11:33-35

Why was Jesus angry? Was He angry at sickness and the enemy who inflicted it? Was He angry because of the lack of faith that He could raise Lazarus from the dead? Was He angry at the injustice and wrongness of Lazarus's death?

In verse 14 Jesus tells His disciples plainly that Lazarus was dead and that He was glad for their sakes that He was not there so that they might believe.

At times I find myself upset deeply, especially where dear friends and family good through something dreadful, I can find myself angry at what has happened to them and want to deal a death blow to the inflicter of the calamity. Myself I sometimes am surprised at the anger and go in search of why I feel so angry.

The result of Jesus' anger was to have the stone removed and Him calling Lazarus out, alive.

Sometimes the result of the anger I feel causes me to go into fix-it mode. Wisdom would dictate as to the appropriateness of that motivation at times, yet at others times it is appropriate.

If I was Jesus (I know that stretches the imagination, however) and I knew what I was doing and what the Father was doing then I would be angry at the circumstance, not so much at the people who knew me and my abilities because Jesus was about His Father's work and He could cope with human frailty. He understood the emotion that comes when you struggle to keep someone alive and have to let them go. The loss ties you to that circumstance and faith is overcome in grief.

We know Jesus wept. Why did He weep? We know He loved this family deeply, We know He was God in the flesh.

I have heard a lot of teaching that says that Jesus was upset at their unbelief, yet, He rose above it.

What do you think?
