So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in Him, "if you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. You will know the truth and the truth will set you free."
"Therefore if the Son sets you free, you are really free." John 8: 31,36
We all seek freedom. If we look around at our world we see people endeavouring to express freedom in all sorts of ways they think are free; drinking to excess, illicit sex, partying, drugs, gambling etc. Yet just because they cannot see the chains of bondage does not mean they do not exist.
Within the church we like to think we are free, Jesus set us free. Yet what did Jesus say was the pivotal ingredient to freedom? Was it keep the 10 commandments? No! He said, "if you continue in my word."
How do you continue in His word? Reading it for a start would be good, listening to it, believing it, living it, walking it out would also be good.
if I live in my house, I say firstly, "this is my house." I take ownership of it. I use the stove, the heating, the electricity, I sleep in it, eat in it, have others visit it, I care for it. It is the same in my Christian walk. I take ownership of my experience and read the manual and apply it.
If I buy a Apple computer, to truly benefit from it, I would use it. To learn how to use it I would read the manual. I would not just buy it and leave it in the cupboard just so I could say I have an Apple computer, what a waste that would be. By opening it and getting to know it my life would be enriched.
I have and iPhone and only in the last week did I learn how to utilise it as a music source in my car as I travelled, but now I love it. On the boat back from Tasmania I discovered that my iPhone could be my Internet connection, amazing. Someone came along and told me how to use it.
I am discovering many things about my Christianity, continually I am being amazed. Why? Because I 'continue' in His word and as I 'continue' in His word, I am set free. Amen!
