After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I thirst."
Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "it is finished!" and bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. John 18:28-30
I find it very interesting that in verse 28, that the words 'I thirst' came after 'after this, Jesus, knowing that all things were accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled.'
What are the significance if these words? In other renditions of the same story the words ,'my God, my God why have You forsaken me' are included. Yet John, who was there, did not include them.
We can thirst for many things and I could well imagine Jesus being thirsty. He had lost a lot of blood and not had anything to drink for a good while.
Often tied up in our natural thirst is a thirst for God, for the new He has for us.
Jesus was returning to the Father, dwelling in His presence forever, I can imagine a thirst for more.
As I complete one chapter of my life I thirst for the new. Existence is not enough I need to find God and move in Him. My life has to be lived in Him, out of Him. When He is not in the picture it is empty and purposeless.
There is so much in God, to not thirst for it is almost a sacrilege. All of God is waiting for the 'sons of God' to appropriate it. Imagine, for a moment with me what that looks like. How great us our God? Amen!
