Causing Others to Stumble
He said to His disciples, "offenses will certainly come, but woe to the one they come through! I would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to stumble. " Luke 16:1,2
We all know offense is alive and well. However the above scripture talks about causing a believer to stumble, probably through wrong teaching.
The above scripture carries heavy weight. Teaching error might appear a light matter in the here and now but in eternity, not so.
I remember, as a young Christian being taught it was wrong for a married woman to work. That teaching caused me no end of grief.
On Friday I was speaking to two elderly aunts who took exception to their church teaching that contraception was wrong. I remember my mother suffering under this legalism. However, her doctor told her she would die if she did not take contraceptions, she went to her priest and received special dispensation.
When I worked as a nurse one of the problems we faced was a certain religion that refused to allow their people to take blood transfusions. Many died.
Religion stifles with wrong teaching but Christ came to free us from such heavy loads. He sets us free. We must look at whose law it is and go to Christ not religion.
