Freedom From Law
For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. If those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made empty and the promise is cancelled. For the law produces wrath. And where there is no law, there is no transgression. This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all descendants- not only those who are of the law but also those who are of Abraham's faith. Romans4:13-16
Have I lost you? You have to have a mind to understand and chew through the scripture when it comes to Romans.
Ok' so what did all that mean?
The Jews believed Abraham was their for-father but the Jews were legalists. Their legalism caused them to crucify Christ for he did not fit their predetermined mould: he forgave sinners, chided the leaders and was not like them.
Paul, the writer of Romans, was well placed to write this book, he was a Pharisee, knew the law and had had an encounter with Christ which changed him forever.
For us Gentiles, this is good news. We do not have to become Jews to inherit grace. It is given freely to anyone who believes.
Paul's argument is that Abraham was given a promise even before he agreed to be marked by circumcision to show be belonged to The Lord and no other god.
So, how is this relevant to us? It is a lesson that teaches: if you start believing you have to do certain rituals to regain salvation you are being robbed. Salvation is only salvation if it is free and remains free.
If you start being a legalist you are on the wrong road. So, stay free! Amen!
