Esau and Jacob
These are the family records of Isaac. Isaac was 40 years old when he took as his wife Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean. Isaac prayed to The Lord on behalf of wife because she was childless. The Lord heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. But the children inside of her struggled with each other, and she said, "Why is this happening to me? So she went to inquire of The Lord. And The Lord said to her: " Two nations are in your womb; two people will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and he older will serve the younger."
When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. The first one came out red looking, covered with hair like a fur coat, and they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out grasping Esau's heel with his hand. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when they were born. Genesis 25:12-26
Isaac has to pray for his wife to conceive. It is interesting that Rebekah, like Sarah was barren. However, after 20 years she birthed twins.
Even in the creation of children God is involved. In the womb two different men are being formed. The battle for suppremacy that is life long has begun. Jacob was destined to carry Abraham's mantle yet Esau actually comes out first. Jacob is favoured by his mother but Esau by his father. If grandfather Abraham would have still been around I wonder what his choice would have been.
Having two nations in a womb at once must have been a challenge. The Israleite nation and the Edomites both very different and always destined to be at odds with each other. Raising both knowing their destinies would have been interesting. Why did God do this? Why two nations from one man?
The Edomites would stand in the way of the Israelites returning from Egypt and be a constant harassment until subdued by king David. Later under future Isralei kings there would be a resurgence of their Independant and idolatrous ways until their eventual absorption into the Jewish nation and a turing to the Jewish religion and submitted to circumcision.
Are they a type of gentile nation away from God and finally brought home?
Christianity binds all nations under one God through Chtist. We are redeemed in Him, blessed and made whole in Him. I am so grateful that Christ came and made a way for us all to belong under one roof. No more dividing personalities or cultures, all can be one. Amen!
