Slaves
When you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve you for six years and in the seventh he is to leave a free man without paying anything. If he arrives alone, he is to leave alone; if he arrives with a wife, his wife is to leave with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons and daughters, the wife and her children belong to her master, and the man must leave alone.
But if the slave declares: I love my master, my wife, and my children; I do not want to leave as a free man, his master is to bring him to the judges and then bring him to the doorpost. His master must pierce his ear with an awl, and he will serve his master for life. Exodus 21:1-6
In our western culture we now abhor slavery. Yet today slavery is rife. Sex slavery is alive and well and the church has taken a stance against it.
In the above scripture we see godly slavery. This allowed for those who sold themselves into slavery to repay a debt or who were impoverished. It has room for freedom in the seventh year without further indenture.
Modern slavery is not freely done! Children are enslaved unwillingly. Parents sell their children at times for money, thinking that their children will be better off. The children are abused terribly by beastly adults and there is no thought of justice or freedom, ever, for the children.
The scripture was given so that justice would be done, not injustice. It provides for release and freedom.
It is interesting that if a salve wants to stay with a master then he has his ear pierced. Pain is inflicted and an eternal reminder that the slave belongs to another. However, this is done willingly, not under compulsion.
Justice surrounds freedom, injustice bondage. Jesus came to set captives free.
Without Christ we are in bondage to sin, with Christ we are free to live in Him. Amen!
A Christian is free and is one who sets others free. Amen!
