The Mob Met The Saviour
While He was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. His betrayer had given them a signal. "The One I kiss," he said, "He's the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard." So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, "Rabbi!" - and kissed Him. Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him. And one of those who stood drew his sword, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his ear. But Jesus said to them, "have you come out with swords and clubs, as though I were a criminal, to capture Me? Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple complex, but you didn't arrest Me. But the scriptures must be fulfilled." Then they all ran away. Mark 14:43-50
All the gospels record this incident, the gospel of Luke tells us that Jesus healed the man who lost his ear, John tells us that it was Peter who did the deed.
How sad for Jesus that a disciple betrayed Him and how sad for Judas that he did the deed.
As Jesus predicted all the disciples ran away. He was now alone to face His accusers. Yet He knew that He must do this to fulfill prophesy.
The crowd or mob, as scripture describes them, came under cover of night for this was the only way they would be able to avoid the people.
Isaiah 53:4 tells us:
Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried out pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God and afflicted.
Here we see Jesus was struck down by God. For what reason? To bear our sicknesses and pains.
Verse 5 goes on to say:
But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds.
So we can add: He paid for our sins and wickedness and paid the price for our peace.
Peace is sadly lacking and here we find it. It is found in Jesus. Amen!
How do I obtain it? By faith in what He did for me and accept it freely given.
How cool is that? Very, very precious, very, very good!!! Amen!
