The New Covenant
As they were eating, He took bread, blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it, this is My body."
Then He took a cup, and after giving thanks, He gave it to them, and so they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is My blood that establishes the covenant, it is shed for many. I assure you: I will no longer drink the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it in a new way in the Kingdom of God." After singing psalms, they went out to the Mount of Olives." Mark 14:22-26
Jesus, the new sacrificial lamb, was creating a new covenant Himself.
This covenant was based on fellowship, relationship and a sacrifice far greater than any in all the centuries before. A perfect man would give Himself and win back the loving relationship God had with Adam and Eve. He was our restoration, our cleansing, our reconnection. He would redeem us from all the curse of sin and make a way for us to walk sinless, as we walk in Him.
The bread represented His body that would be broken for us but as it was broken it healed us, saved us, united us.
The wine represented His blood that would come from crushing Him. His blood, more precious than any wine, than any treasure, would cleanse us and redeem us. His blood established the new covenant. It was shed for many, that all might be saved.
No longer do we need to sacrifice animals, no longer do we need a priest, we have a loving Saviour. Amen!
