The Trial

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for a testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they could find none. For many were giving false testimony against Him, but the testimonies did not agree. Some stood up and were giving false testimony against Him stating, "we heard Him say, 'I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.'" Yet their testimonies did not agree even on this.
Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, " Don't You have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?" But He kept silent and did not answer anything. Again the High priest questioned Him, "Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"
"I am," said Jesus, "and all of you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming in the clouds of heaven."
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "Why do we still need witnesses?" What is your decision?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying,   "Prophesy!" The temple police also took Him and slapped Him. Mark 14:55-65

How sad that the chief priests and the high priest tried to rely on false witnesses. They did not know the guile in their own hearts. Why did they hate Jesus? Because He confronted their sin and did not want to acknowledge their sin. For leaders to not live in truth and awareness of the true condition of their own hearts was sad. All of Israel was being led by such darkness.

Caphias, the high priest asked Jesus why He did not respond to the accusations, He did not need to. As they did not agree they destroyed their own testimony.

Jesus gave Himself to them when He answered the one true question: 'Are you the Messiah?' He was and is. He answered with 'I am,' the name for God. This was sacred and anyone who claimed to be God died because of their blasphemy. Also, Jesus had avoided the name Messiah throughout His ministry so as to avoid the wrong connotation of what the people thought the Messiah would do, yet here He agrees to the title.

Jesus was right in that all would see Him seated at the right hand of God (the Power). All had to die and all had to stand before God in judgement. Yet they did not fear this, they should have.

Jesus had to die so that the sacrifice would be complete and we set free from the power of sin, yet I would not like to have borne the consequences these men faced. Eternity in darkness, forever lost. Not good!

All I can say is: "thank You Jesus for giving Your life for mine, I am so grateful." Amen!
