Talking or Doing?
As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work- which is faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. I Tim 1:3-7
When we are puffed up in ourselves we love to talk about theories rather than live in faith towards God.
If you find yourself inactive and drawn more to sitting around talking, time for a check up from the neck up.
For a few years my mother and my brother and his wife lived out in the western suburbs of Sydney. My mum loved to go to a certain shopping centre and there, almost every day, you would find a group of men, retirees, sitting around chatting. They looked and sounded Greek, but I am not absolutely sure. It looked friendly and fun but I noticed they waxed long and eloquently about whatever they were talking about. They were invariably large (over-weight).
I find sitting around hypothesising about life, the earth, the galaxies ok for short periods but then I need to do something. If I sit around with other Christians and continually discuss scripture, I might enjoy myself, but am I helping anyone?
I am called to walk by faith, not sit by faith. Walking implies action, movement towards a goal, a future destiny. I have a future and a hope and I want to hear my Lord say: "Well done!"
