Melchizedek
For this Melchizedek-
King of Salem, priest of the most High God,
Who met Abraham and blessed him as he returned from defeating the kings,
And Abraham gave Him a tenth of everything;
First His name means king of righteousness,
Then also King of Salem,
Meaning king of peace;
Without father, mother, or genealogy,
Having neither beginning of days nor end of life,
But resembling the Son of God-
Remains a priest forever. Hebrews 7:1-3
Melchizedek appears suddenly in scripture when Abraham is returning from a battle. Yet Abraham recognised something. Abraham knew this was no ordinary man. I wonder what stories were being passed around about Melchizedek? In an age of mystery, hidden way back in time, what were the thinking processes of the people of the day? Were they want to superstition? Did the lack of knowing cause them to create mystery where there was none or did this man Melchizedek live in a way that spoke to all around Him.
What did Abraham recognise in Melchizedek? I love the way He appears and the way Abraham treats Him. Why do we not hear more about Him? Was it because He was in a land removed from where Abraham lived? Who were the people who served Melchizedek? Did He have angels to serve Him? Or did He have mere mortals? Why was He there? We only hear about Him once in Genesis but elsewhere in Psalms. Did Jesus come in the flesh in that time just for Abraham? If so the possibility is incredulous. Melchizedek brings Abraham bread and wine in Genesis 14.
The fact that Melchizedek is now mentioned in Hebrews ties it all together beautifully and adds credence to the Hebrew belief of the validity of Melchizedek.
I love finding Him in Genesis and Psalms and now again in Hebews as we begin to see the love God has for His people who are totally His, is there nothing He will not do or nowhere He will not go?
Thank You Lord!
I am seeing the love God has for individuals who He is reaching out to, I have a holy respect for His reach and like a midwife and watching over the birth of these new souls, praying for them and loving them. How honoured am I!
