Growing With Milk

For: 'all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flowers fail, but the word of the Lord endures forever.'( Isaiah 40:6-8) and this is the word that was preached as the gospel to you.
So rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, desire the pure spiritual milk, so that you may grow by it for your salvation, since you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 1:24,25; 1 Peter 2:1-3

We can see that in ou natural self, our flesh, we are transient indeed, like grass. How then can we purpose to puff ourselves up in vanity, assuming we are more than grass? I'd safely say because we become deceived.

It is interesting that the word, preached as the gospel to us enables us to rid ourselves of malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander which are all the first steps in the fall. We become deceived, James tells us, by our own evil desires. Ooh! That is getting to the heart of the matter! So, lurking deep down in the dark hidden recesses of our being are evil desires.  It is good that they come out, then we are faced wih the reality: 'I am not so good without Christ, but I can put these suckers to death by the power of Christ working in me!'

Peter urges us to desire the pure spiritual milk of the word of God, so that we might grow by it for our salvation. Another ooh! You mean once saved always saved needs tweaking? Fraid so! Our salvation is a walk, an outworking of a glorious initial meeting with the King of King, the lover of our souls.

The Christian walk is a battle, a marathon and not for the lazy or fainthearted, but so, so worthwhile. For all eternity the price will be small compared to the joy that awaits us! Amen!
