The Cup of Demons
I am speaking to you as wise people. Judge for yourselves what I say. The cup of blessing that we give thanks for, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are one body, for all of us who are many are one body, for all of us share that one bread. Look at the people of Israel. Do not those who eat the sacrifice participate in what is offered on the altar? What am I saying then? That food offered to an idol is anything? No, but I do say that what they sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? 1Cor 10:15-22
Again we look at the sin of presumption that partners with arrogance. Arrogance makes one feel immune to the problems before it. It is a false sense of security. The other side of arrogance is it fails to hear the heart of the body and more importantly the head.
We know that the Corinthians had become arrogant and were looking down on Paul. They were failing to see how they attitude was affecting the body they belonged to. They failed to see how Christ was affected by their witness in eating in idol temples.
Not having ears to hear or hearts to understand is serious. Belonging to the body of Christ requires us to intentionally think of our brothers and sisters in Christ, not just our needs, tastes or wants.
