The Magnificent Thread
Now, I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, all passed through the sea, and all were baptised into Moses, in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from a spiritual rock, that followed them, and that rock was Christ. But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.
Now these things became an example for us, so that we will not desire evil things as they did. 1Cor 10:1-6
I have spoken many times about the golden thread woven throughout the Old Testament, representing Jesus. Paul could see it. Here he tells us that the significant spiritual things that happened to the children of Israel in the wilderness were because of Christ. He was the spiritual water that flowed from the believer, and here in the Old Testament He is attributed with being the Spiritual water that flowed from the rock, providing water for all the people and their cattle.
The people in the wilderness failed to see their God was with them and open their hearts to Him as their God. They complied with the rituals and their sacrificial nature but not once came to their God is a desire for a relationship with Him. Of all the millions of people we see Joshua and Caleb being pronounced righteous because of their faith and obedience. We see Joshua as the only one that spent time in God's presence, apart form Moses.
To know that your God was pouring out life through the water from the rock and miss it's significance is sad. To be so carnally minded, only wanting to quench our thirst is shameful. Paul is using these people as an example of what not to do.
I cannot come to Christ for salvation only, as an escape from hell. There is so much more. Relationship is important all through the church, first with our Saviour, secondly with the saints and thirdly an outreach to the world with a heart that cares.
