Ordinary Folk
Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors!
Luke 2:13-14 HCSB
This scripture comes from the chapter in Luke where he describes the angelic visitation to shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem, announcing the birth of Jesus.
Imagine it. You are at work doing what you have done since your youth, caring for sheep in the field. When in the Nepali highlands I saw such shepherds. These were young lads and they were playing volley ball whilst overlooking the sheep. These were the simple and lowest of low dressed poorly living in tents.
Why an angelic visitation to shepherds? What was the point? Eere these godly shepherds like David had been? Were they seeking Him? Were they discussing Him? Yet, like the choice of the mother Mary, simple folk were chosen to be involved in this monument out occasion. God was showing His love to these shepherds. Was He honouring David by doing this? David had been a good shepherd.
The angels gave glory to God and brought a gift to men. They were heralding the birth of the Saviour for all mankind. The new had come. Oh joy! Joy ! Joy!
The shepherds were told to go and find the baby lying in a Manger in Bethlehem. Who minded the sheep? Why?
Again, why shepherds? All of the Old Testament has God appearing to a man, a significant man. What was the purpose of God sending all these angels to a bunch of ordinary no name nobodies?
You may wonder why God chose you. You may feel very ordinary. You are not to God. He sent this divine encounter to simple folk so that we could understand His love for simple folk. His love is to all, not just the chosen few. He is willing to use the many ordinary folk, not just the great men and women. He has a message for the ordinary folk, He loves us and desires to hang out with us in our environment, a field or a stable, where we are at home, He is there. Amen!
