Words of Blessing
The Lord spoke to Moses: “Tell Aaron and his sons how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: May Yahweh bless you and protect you; may Yahweh make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; may Yahweh look with favor on you and give you peace. In this way they will pronounce My name over the Israelites, and I will bless them.”
Numbers 6:22-27 HCSB
Did you know the actual blessing was a priestly blessing. Blessings were invoking the power of God on behalf of the people of God.
This blessing would bring abundance; numerous descendants; a fruitful land; health; protection from enemies but most of all; God's abiding presence.
The face of God reflects the righteous character of God. God is good! He is full of justice and mercy and this I seek daily. However, more important to me is the presence of God. His presence makes all things better. Amen!
Israelis have a corner on pronouncing blessings. Fathers bless their children constantly. In the Old Testament a father gave His blessing when he was dying. Yet Jewish fathers now seem to do it weekly, at least some I know of do. I would love to know where this blessing came from. Needless to say we can pronounce blessings on others as we do our day. What does it cost us? A bit of thought, time and effort, and of course genuine love and concern.
Yesterday I walked with a neighbour who told me she was unwell. I laid hands on her and blessed her. It is much easier to give a blessing than to curse or not care.
Jesus Himself taught us our words are tools of life. Our words are creative. Our words build up or tear down. We must be careful how we use them. Amen!
