two sorrows
For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death. 2 Corinthians 7:10 NLT

I can be sorry I am caught, sorry for myself, or truely repentant for my sin. Repentance goes to the heart of a matter, the result is never repeating the sin again. Sorrow is superficial and unlikely to bring permanent change.
Repentance that bring change is what God is about. Sorrow is what we are about. Scripture speaks about seeking repentance and never finding it. (Heb 12:16,17) this refers to Esau who sold his birthright for a bowl of stew. He had promised his brother Jacob that he could have the birthright for food. We can imagine his repentance would have been more like sorrow as he could not change a thing.
Godly repentance leads to salvation. (2 Cor 7:10) I know this repentance because it brought me to Christ. I have also experienced it along my journey when the Holy Spirit convicts me of sin. Noone can convict of sin, except the Holy Spirit.
Allow the Holy Spirit room, He is the best source of truth I know. Amen!
