“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”Romans 12:12 NLT
We know from reading Psalms that continuing in hope is not always easy. David, the annointed King, was pursued by the reigning king for some 13 odd years. The problem for David was his integrity. He had many opportunities to kill Saul, but refused. He knew that was God’s task.
So, when we find ourselves in a similar position and the pain becomes unbearable what do we do? Go to the Lord, find new strength and patiently endure believing that righteousness will conquer.
David’s final trial was his worst. He and his men had been out on a raid, returning home exhausted they find their families have been taken by another raiding party. Beyond exhaustion he inquired of the Lord, “should I pursue?” The Lord says “yes!” And so he does. He finally rescues the families but not before he faced death at the hands of his own men. Returning to home base he receives news that Saul is dead and he is being asked to return and be the king. I wonder, if at that time David had given up hope? Or had he seen himself as a forever evader of the mad king?
Suddenly, he is king. What a relief! Or perhaps he is over the idea after almost dying at the hands of his men. I can’t wait to talk to him.
