To serve

“just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life — a ransom for many.”Matthew‬ ‭20‬:‭28‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Jesus had every right to be served, He was king! Yet He taught Hus disciples that He came to serve mankind. They struggled with the fact that they had been given authority, they had been sent out two by two and if a town refused to listen to them they were to shake the dust off their feet in judgement. Now Jesus is teaching them to serve. It would have been a struggle. Prophesy indicated that their king would come and deal with their oppressors, however, Jesus pointed to greater prophesy, Isaiah 53, in which their saviour would be a lamb led to the slaughter. They struggled with this imagery. Killing the baddies was more appealing.

What parts of prophesy appeal to us more? Are we resistant to servanthood because we know we are called to rule and reign with Christ? What does serving look like to us? Being paid to work in a restaurant? The servanthood we are called to is without pay. What are the limits to servanthood? When does self-preservation kick in? I have this struggle at present. I feel like I am being used by a lady to be available twice a day to tend to her wounds. I am not paid. Yet I am expected to help. There are no days off, a continual committment without reprieve. What would Jesus do? He had crowds follow him everywhere. For a time he had no rest. How long did this continue for?

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son! Amen!
