We all must eat, yet how we eat and how we drink is important to God. I am reminded of a parable Jesus told. There was a rich man at who’s gate a poor man called Lazarus lived. The poor man was a beggar. The rich man went in and out not considering Lazarus. He had parties and ate bountifully. Both died. Lazarus went to Abraham’s arms and the rich man to eternal flames. The rich man begged Abraham to send Lazarus with a drop of water to cool his hot tongue and Abrahm said, ‘No, he si not able to go, there is a chasm between us and you “. The rich man asked for Lazarus to go to his brothers and tell them to repent but again Abraham said, “No! If they did not believe the law and the prophets why would they listen to Lazarus?”
If we are rich, and we are, by the standards of the poor, if they were watching us at mealtimes, at restaurants, would they see gluttony and greed or circumspect behaviour, behaviour mindful of the poor.
When I go to third world places I see both of these and am embarrassed because we live and eat without consideration of the poor. We do not need the excesses we indulge in, we could go without them, for the sake of the poor.
Lord open our eyes, let us see what You see and may we partner with you in what you do. Amen!
