“So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.”
1 Peter 5:6 NLT
We might expect honourable because of our status or age, but God is the one who gives honour. Experience and talent does not equate to the right for honour, man’s honour is fraught with self or done under compulsion is shabby and worthless. God-given honour is best.
I am reminded of a story in Isiah where God denotes a man and raises another up. She an became proud and God said this to him:
““Yes, I will drive you out of office,” says the Lord. “I will pull you down from your high position. And then I will call my servant Eliakim son of Hilkiah to replace you. I will dress him in your royal robes and will give him your title and your authority. And he will be a father to the people of Jerusalem and Judah. I will give him the key to the house of David—the highest position in the royal court. When he opens doors, no one will be able to close them; when he closes doors, no one will be able to open them. He will bring honor to his family name, for I will drive him firmly in place like a nail in the wall. They will give him great responsibility, and he will bring honor to even the lowliest members of his family.””Isaiah 22:19-24 NLT
Here we see God bestowing honour on Eliakim and demoting Shebna. Jesus also admonished the Pharisees for wanting the best position at banquets. It seems pride and grasping at not the Kingsom of God’s ways. The saying: ‘pride comes before a fall’ is true.
As the oldest member of my immediate family I must remember this also. As I go to Nepal I must give honour that God gives and respect whom He wants me to respect and not grasp for position. Amen!
