“Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”
1 John 3:18 NLT
We say things easily. The test is what we do with what we say. Are acrions joined to our words?
Yesterday I asked a Nepali friend why the people of Kathmandu did not seem to be bothered about how the earthquake had affected people in the western parts of Nepal. She replied, “we Nepali people are like that, we live for ourselves”. What a confession coming from this poor nation. Yet, would we true Westerners have such a candid confession?
Last weekend the earthquakes were real. They were real for us and we determined to help. Yet, a week later it is but a dream for those not living in the aftermath of the disaster. Did it really happen? Yes! It did and people are living in the open air afraid to return to their crumbling dwellings. Living without coverings in winter will surely be a deadly outcome.
We have taken supplies to the people: tents, blankets, mats to sleep on and medicinal supplies. The people are very grateful as their government has failed to help.
Back home in Australia people are being made homeless by fires and storms. The earth is continually devastated. The challenge is for government and local agencies to accomodate the continual disasters.
What would God have us do? Jesus said: “if you do it for the least of these, you do it for me.” We must maintain an open heart, willing to give aid to those he shows us. We cannot live for self alone, we are His hands and feet. Amen!
