““But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God!”
Job 19:25-26 NLT
The ancient book of Job is still relevant today. It is considered to be one of the first books written. Some scholars believe Moses wrote this book. Yet, as we read this passage it rings true as a timeless piece. The book explaines the spirit world behind the natural world. Job is plunged into suffering and believes God has removed his grace from him. What has actually happened is God has allowed Satan to test Job. He is tested severely. He loses his children, his animals and his property is destroyed, finally his body is inflicted with boils. In his plight his friend come to commiserate. For the first week they sit with him in silence but then they start to judge him. Most of the book is taken with these judgements and Job’s defence. The book ends with God showing up. Job’s questions are not answered, however Job is content as His God is with him. God restores all he has lost and more besides.
The Book of Job speaks into human plight. When we suffer and God feels remote. It brings reality to suffering. It shows that this suffering comes from the enemy of our soul. We are hated by Satan. He seeks to destroy us. However, God is our defence.
This particular passage is beautiful and represents Job’s faith in His God. It is even prophetic. His God did stand upon the earth and when he died he did see God, in fact God came to him in his suffering. He is with us in our suffering and we will see Him again. Amen!
