Study

“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”Joshua‬ ‭1‬:‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This scripture was part of the word God spoke to Joshua as he was being appointed to lead God’s people into the promised land. Joshua would have been around 80 at this time. Joshua amd Caleb we’re the only two left of the original group who went 40 years earlier to scout out the promised land. They remained as they had brought a good report, whereas the other 10 brought a bad report about the size of the people in the promised land. Because the people believed the other 10 they also perished in the next 40 years wandering around in the desert.

The Book of Instruction would have been all that God had given Moses. It contained the Laws and how the laws were to be kept. As Moses would have been trained in Pharaoh’s court to read and write, he probably would have been the only one able to do this. The rest had been Egyptian slaves.  It is assumed that Joshua and some of the other people would have learned to read and write by this time.

To meditate upon the scriptures day and night would be to have them continually front of mind. For me to think on and write about the scripture morning and evening is ensuring I start and end the day in the word. I also listen to preached messages throughout the day, but mostly in the evening. I do not have TV any more and apart from a news App and social media I use preaching of the word to keep my mind focused. I have found that if I have a diet of entertainment my mind and heart are hardened against scripture and therefore I need to work harder to set them free from worldly thinking.

Stay focused! Amen!
