Esau and Jacob

These are the family records of Isaac. Isaac was 40 years old when he took as his wife Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean. Isaac prayed to The Lord on behalf of wife because she was childless. The Lord heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. But the children inside of her struggled with each other, and she said, "Why is this happening to me? So she went to inquire of The Lord. And The Lord said to her: " Two nations are in your womb; two people will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and he older will serve the younger." When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. The first one came out red looking, covered with hair like a fur coat, and they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out grasping Esau's heel with his hand. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when they were born. Genesis 25:12-26 Isaac has to pray for his wif...

Ishmael

These are the names of Ishmael's sons; their names according to family records are: Nebaioth, Ishmael's firstborn, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedmah. These were Ishmael's sons, and these are their names by their villages and encampments: 12 leaders of their clans. This is the length of Ishmael's life, 137 years. He took his last breath and died, and was gathered to his people. And they settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt as you go towards Aahur. He lived in opposition to all his brothers. Genesis 25:12-18 Ishmael was not God's chosen yet He still provided for him and prospered him, perhaps this was because of his father Abraham. Ishmael lived 137 years near Egypt. Ishmael's mother had been an Egyptian slave and so it is natural that when she and her son left Abraham and Sarah that she returned to her homeland. Back in chapter 21 God told Hagar, Ishmael's mother, that He would prosper I...

My Epitaph

This the length of Abraham's life: 175 years. He took his last breath and died at a ripe old age, old and contented, and he was gathered to his people. His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Macphela, near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite. This was the field that Abraham bought from the Hittites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah. After Abraham's death God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lanai-rio. Genesis 25:7-11 What a good life Abraham had, he spent most of it in ordinary activities and occasionally God showed up to liven things up. Yet Abraham showed a godly character. After Sarah's death Abraham had another wife who bore him six sons yet he sent them all away when he knew his time was coming to and end, away to the east and away from his son Isaac whom he gave everything he had to. Abraham was buried by Isaac and Ishmael. This is the first we hear of the renewed connection. Perhaps after Sarah's death Abraha...

God of Answers

Lord, God of my master Abraham, " he prayed, " give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. Let the girl to whom I say, "Please lower your water jug so that I may drink, and who also responds, "Drink, and I'll water your camels also"-let her be the one You have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know You have shown kindness to my master." Genesis 24:12-14 Now we see Abraham's servant praying to God and as we read on God answers his prayer by sending Rebecca before he had finished speaking. Another person begins to see God as his God. Rebecca acted quickly and provided for Abraham's servant and his camels. She sounds like a lovely kind woman. She is rewarded with gold. The servant then asks if there is room in her father's house for a guest and when he discovers who her father is he is smitten with God's goodness. In verse 26 he bows down to the ground and worships The Lord. Rebecca is prepared to go with ...

A Wife For Isaac

Abraham was now old (140), getting on in years, and The Lord had blessed him in everything. Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his household who managed all he owned, "Place your hand under my thigh, and I will have you swear by The Lord, God of heaven and earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaananites among whom I live, but will go to my land and my family to take a wife for my son Isaac." The servant said to him, "Suppose the woman is unwilling to follow me back to this land? Should I have your son go back to the land you came from?" Abraham answered him, "Make sure that you don't take my son there. The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from my native land, who spoke to me and swore to me, "I will give this land to your offspring- He will send His angel before you, and you can take a wife for my son from there. If the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are free f...

Godly Man

Now Sarah lived 127 years; these were all the days of her life. Sarah died at Kiriath-Arab (Hebron) in the land of Caanan, and AbrHam went to mourn for her and weep for her. Then Abraham got up from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites: "Iam a foreign resident among you. Give me a burial site among you so that I can bury my dead. The Hittites replied to Abraham, " Listen to us, lord. You are God's chose n one among us. Bury your dead in our finest burial place. None of us will withhold from you his burial place for burying your dead." Then Abraham rose and bowed down to the Hittites, the people of the land. Genesis 23:1-7 What a good reputation Abraham had. The Hittites knew him to be a man of God, yet he did nothing extraordinary, he merely lived among these people. Abraham did not own land, he was a sojourner in a foreign land. Nonetheless he was a respected leader and  he was not too proud to offer to pay full price for the land he wanted. The owner of t...

Possessing Gates

"By Myself I have sworn, this is the Lord's declaration: "Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your only son, I will indeed bless you and make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and the sand on the seashore. A your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies. And all the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring because you have obeyed My command." Genesis 22:16-18 Much of the above blessing is a confirmation of the previous blessings God spoke to Abraham with one, exciting exception. Previously in Chapter 12, when God called Abram, as he was called then, he was told that should he choose to accept the mission and follow The Lord then he would be blessed, his name would be great, those who cursed him would be cursed, those who blessed him would be blessed and all the people of the earth would be blessed through him. However, he is now told that his offspring would possess the gates of their enemies. This is one pro...
