Do it right!

Deuteronomy 16:19 (MSG) Don't twist the law. Don't play favorites. Don't take a bribe—a bribe blinds even a wise person; it undermines the intentions of the best of people.

It seems that our base nature loves to twist the law, we are constantly examining it for loopholes.

What can I get away with, how can I avoid this penalty, this fine, this tax. Is there a legal way I can avoid paying my ex-spouse what is due to her/him?

As Christians we have come to practice avoidance in so many areas that when we must honour our parents, our spouse our children we fail to do it God's way.

Jesus took the Pharisees to task one time for they had worked out how not to pay what was due to parents, dedicate it to God. What a crummy attitude!

The law confronts us, makes demands on us, reproves us. Because of injustice in those who administer the law we have come to disregard it, yet the law is perfect even when the administrators fail.

Every time we are confronted by the law it would be smart to say, God what are You saying here? sometimes it is plain and simple, you were speeding, you parked illegally.

I remember one time being booked for speeding in a school zone in a town I was driving through. There was a lot happening in that particular stretch of road, there were road works off to the side and signs everywhere.

I was travelling at 60kms/hr and thought I was ok until stopped by the police. I pleaded my case with the policeman but was still fined so I wrote to the body collecting the fine and after consideration I was released from my debt. My heart was genuine and attempting to uphold the law.

There have been times when my heart has not been genuine and I have had to pay the fine. I trust my God to keep me honest. As much as a fine is inconvenient I must pay for my wrong as it does my heart good to not try and avoid my sin.

Paying bribes so as to avoid penalty is also not good for me, I must face my heart and it's motives and keep a short account before God. Amen!
