Stuff!
Isaiah 2:7-8 (MSG) a world rolling in wealth, Stuffed with things, no end to its machines and gadgets, And gods—gods of all sorts and sizes. These people make their own gods and worship what they make.
Funny thing the above was written about a people thousands of years ago. They didn't have electricity or modern technology yet they still had gadgets.
I love technology and science. I think of all the possibilities that could be, I have said for years 'one day we will fax parcels'. Science fiction is a welcome fit in my brain.
However, gadgets and machines are tools to use not to live for. If I only work to earn money to buy stuff and my whole world revolves around stuff then it is pretty narrow, would you not say? Rather stuffy!
There is a cause greater than accumulation of stuff, there is a greater enjoyment than the latest game.
If we are herded into the carrel, boxed into a very small existence then we lose out on all there is for us.
There is more than a diet of TV, games and videos, there is the enjoyment of relationship, friendship, interconnectedness.
There is more than living for the next binge, the next fix.
We do all these things because we are empty and need filling yet what we try to fill ourselves with is like drinking diet soda. The brain registers that there was a sweet taste, so where is the kick?
Our whole being longs for what it was meant to be, to live on the edge of the wave of life in the Spirit, daring great things, seeing great things, doing great things.
I am reminded of The Matrix and how Neo had to believe that the world he had been raised in was using him for electricity, food for his enemy.
What if there is more than we know?
