And Jesus responded, "Simon, son of Jonah, you are blessed because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven, and I also say to you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church and the forces of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth is already bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth is already loosed in heaven." Matthew 16:17-19
Peter had just declared that Jesus was the Christ and Jesus turned to Him and said the above. Peter had a revelation of who Christ was, he did not learn it in church or at school but he had a 'light bulb' experience. The truth was revealed to him by the Father.
Now, upon that revelation experience Jesus was going to build His church and He went on the say the gates of Hell would not prevail against that revelation experience.
Out of that revelation experience would come the authority to bind and loose, the 'keys of the kingdom' stuff. However, because this all flowed from the Father, what was bound and loosed would what had already been bound and loosed in heaven. Jesus was not giving Peter authority to create his own creed, He was giving him access to heaven's creed.
The keys of the kingdom allowed him access to heaven.
On SBS TV here in Australia there is a programme about the authenticity of the bible. There are people with very strong fleshly opinions trying to assert their authority and I smile. You can have all the opinions under the sun and spruik and strut all you like but a day is coming when you will stand before the Father, naked and realise that you are indeed a created creature and He is God.
There is only One God. Amen!
