Then He said to her, "your sins are forgiven." Luke 7:48 ( the whole story Luke 7:36-48)
This woman has been a prostitute and knew she needed forgiveness.
She took, perhaps, her most treasured possession, an alabaster jar full of fragrant spices, and anointed Jesus feet with them, along with her tears.
Jesus had been invited to dinner at the house of a Pharisee called Simon. Simon did not show Jesus the common courtesy of a bowl of water to wash His feet, nor did he greet Jesus with a kiss.
The Pharisees were amazed that Jesus allowed a sinful woman to kiss His feet, cry all over them, wipe them with her hair and anoint them with her spices. They were even more amazed when He forgave her sins.
This story shows me a Saviour full of compassion, lacking pretension, and full of free -standing with God the Father. He was without sin, He was not trying to exalt Himself but just do His job, seeking and saving that which was lost.
The story makes me grateful that I love a God without judgement or guile. I am safe in His love.
I am made aware of His grace and forgiveness. I am set free by His simplicity. He walked around ministering to people who needed Him, there was no hidden agenda, He was who He said He was.
This frees me to be focused on the lost. He does not require me to be anything other than His friend. Out of that friendship will flow a doing like His, seeking and saving the lost. Amen!
