Then He told them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." Luke 6:5
Jesus was being hammered by the Pharisees for walking through the fields with His disciples and eating the grain in the fields, on the Sabbath.
God had told His people that the Sabbath was His and that they were not to work on the sabbath(Exodus 20:8). The Pharisees had built and built reams of legalism all from that one scripture.
Jesus said He was Lord of the Sabbath. He came to fulfill the law and give us true rest. Rest from law and legalism.
The Pharisees hated Him for this statement for He was removing Himself from their jurisdiction.
In Genesis the Lord rested on the seventh day after creation. In Exodus He instructed His people to also rest. So that they understood He gave them some instruction.
When we do not have a relationship with the giver of freedom we struggle with law, yet Jesus called Himself 'Son of Man'. He identified with us, yet He was also Lord of the Sabbath.
In Christ we are free, because of Him to enjoy the rest that He gives. Being legalistic about rest on Sunday is not rest. True rest if freedom from bondage and judgement. Only He can give us that.
Make relationship with the giver of life the first thing you do, and that One will give you rest. Amen!
