Mercy and Humility

He said to them, "How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken! Didn't the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?" Luke 24:25-27

Jesus here was speaking to two disciples as they walked along the road from Jerusalem after the crucifixion. They were prevented from recognising Him.

As I read these words I thought they could apply to me. How many times will I stress about a mistake I have made, go to the Lord for mercy and fear the worst. In fact it happened only recently.

How unwise and slow to believe His grace is for me, am I at times, especially when I know I deserve judgement. Now I know that when I go to the Lord, repentant and ask for mercy I receive it. However if I fight for my rights I receive no mercy, in fact I score judgement.

Before Christmas I made a mistake by allowing forms to be sent off, when if I had waited things would have been different. The price I had to pay was $3,000. Rather than ask for mercy and be contrite I went on the attack about the injustice of it all, foolish and I have had to pay every cent.

However, only recently my employee had been a little too quick to send off forms, again, and this time I went to the Lord first and asked for mercy, then I contacted the client and accepted a rebuke and offered to make amends. I received mercy and I am sooo grateful.

Now this is an example but the principle is the same. As I humble myself and accept the responsibility, then ask the Lord for mercy, I receive it. When I do not humble myself and fight, I lose.
