Are You Ready?

Elijah left there and found Elisha son of Shaphat as he was plowing. Twelve teams of oxen were in front of him, and he was with the twelfth team. Elijah walked by him and threw his mantle over him. 1 Kings 19:19

Elisha was busy working in his current trade. He may have had a heart that sought The Lord and was desirous of being used by God, yet we don't see him idle or wasting time. He was diligent in what he had to do.

When Elijah threw his mantle on Elisha we see Elisha respond and run after the prophet. Politely he asked permission to say goodbye to his family, it was given. Elisha next kills the beasts and makes a sacrifice to The Lord, then he follows Elijah and serves him. We know his family must have been well off because he had a team of 12 oxen to plow, he was able to sacrifice the oxen and make a feast for the people, perhaps the people of his village.

Position did not prevent Elisha from becoming a servant to Elijah. He was delighted to do so.

Anyone waiting to be used by God? Be diligent in your current work and when the time comes begin as a servant, learn to lay down all for the opportunity to serve. A servant heart learns more than the arrogant and reaps a greater harvest. We see Elisha go from strength to strength.
