Prayer For Missionaries
For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of our afflictions that took place in Asia: we were completely overwhelmed- beyond our strength- so that we even despaired of life. Indeed, we personally had a death sentence within ourselves, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a terrible death, and He will deliver us again while you join in helping us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gift that came to us through the prayers of many. 2 Corinthians 1:8-11
Each of us will suffer, in some way, for the gospel. If we accept that fact and not become angry and resentful then we will also realise there are those of us who give their lives for the sake of the gospel. Rather than obsessing about my own world I can lift my mind and heart to the above request that not only Paul made of his brethren but today many would ask it of us, their brethren in safe western cultures.
I personally know a couple that are well beyond retirement who love Indonesia and live there out of choice, for the sake of the gospel. This is not a safe place. There are constantly mindful of the opposition they face in that place. Who cares?
Paul, above tells the Corinthian church a little of his suffering but later in chapter 11:24-27 he lays out the exact nature of his suffering. Paul was giving the Corinthians a lesson on the nature of true ministry, especially since they had been troubled by false teachers.
Do you receive letters from missionaries or hear them talk? Is it easy to dismiss their need for prayer and finance? Let's be honest! It is isn't it? What would God have you do? What would He have me do? Let's seek Him and be obedient. Amen!
