Humility Before Honour
Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
Now by the time of the supper, the Devil already had put it into a Judas' heart to betray Him. Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His hands, that He had come from God and was going back to God. So He got up from supper, lay aside His robe, took a towel, and tied it around Himself. Next He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples feet and to dry them with a towel tied around Him. John 13:1-5
As I opened this gospel this morning and began to read I sensed the love. I love this book because it is so full of love.
Jesus loved His disciples, even Judas who betrayed Him. He washed the feet of all the disciples even Judas. Peter was impacted by what Jesus was doing. he did not want his Lord washing his feet but when Jesus told him he could have nothing to do with him if he didn't, he volunteered to have all of him washed. On the contrary Judas was not touched by the act. His heart was hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Do you have a betrayer on your team? One who is offended will betray unless the offense is dealt with and the offended one comes clean. Judas did not choose that option. He hid his sin and it opened a doorway to the Devil. Ephesians 4:27 tells us to not give room to the devil.
Jesus knew what was coming but got up and washed His disciples feet to teach them about attitude. John Maxwell says: attitude determines altitude. If you asked Jesus what He was doing He would say: " humble yourself before God and He will exalt you". James 4:10
Even in His worst trial Jesus had time to be humble. This is a lesson to us. Amen!
