Who is God?
"God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.
Nor is He worshipped with men's hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.
And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preamp pointed times and boundaries of their dwellings.
So that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each of us;
For in Him we live and move and have our being.
Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man's devising.
Truely, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead." Acts 17:24-31
Paul is preaching to a group of men who had never heard about Jesus and who worshipped gods made by themselves to represent deities devised by man.
All the so called gods of the earth eventuate out of fear an an awareness that there is a god or something greater than themselves who is in charge.
Nowadays we hear a lot of people refer to God as 'the universe'. I laugh because the God I know created the universe and is far greater than that. Yet it is mankind grappling with the 'god factor' which they know exists.
In Australia it is trendy to buy Buddha images, yet very few would worship them.
In Catholicism there are many images of Christ, Mary and various 'saints' who they believe they can pray to. I remember as a child, standing before the images of Mary and Jesus and wondering what power thy had. I much preferred Jesus, still do.
So then we are faced with a few truths:
God is the creator
He is not a created image
He does not dwell in a temple made with human hands
He is not worshipped with human hands
He made all men and women from One Blood
God determined where we would live, what our boundaries would be.
Can you see He is in charge, no other man or 'god' comes close?
If He does not live in a temple where does He live? His presence is everywhere but He delights to live in human hearts. In other words we are His temple. This makes us very important to Him. So important that He sent His Son Jesus to live and show us what He is like and to die for our sins so that we can know freedom and relationship.
How good is that? Very!
We now are faced with a choice: will I invite Him in and allow Him to be my God or shun Him for something I can control or some other 'god' because I am fearful?
Test Him! He will be faithful and prove Himself to you! Amen!
