Who Our Children Marry
When Esau was 40 years old, he took as his wives Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basmath daughter of Elon the Hittite. They made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah. Genesis 26:34,35
Abraham had been very particular that his son obtain a wife from his own people back in his home country. Why had Isaac not been as particular when the result of his father's protective choice been so good for him? Was it a laziness? Was is indolence?
What ever the reason his lack of attention to this detail this was going to cause Isaac and Rebekah much grief.
Modern families tend to allow their children to marry whomever they wish. However loving guidance can help shield them and us from much heartache. I remember when my daughter was a teenager, she was and still is very beautiful. the boys swarmed like flies. My then husband and I were on guard and swatting the files with vigilance.
We talked to our children about the type of spouse to pick. Being young they were bound to be influenced by the salesmanship of the potential suitors but we did our best to guide. Both are married and we have 7 grandchildren. Yes there has been moments of strain, usually around boundary issues, which are important for both sides to establish. However, both are happy with their choices and work with their spouses to build a home for their children.
We can never control our married children and this is where prayer comes in. I have to trust my God for them and be vigilant in prayer for them and watch my mouth. They will never do things just how we would and we have age and experience on our side.
