Offering Peace
When you approach a city to fight against it you must make an offer of peace. If it accepts your offer of peace and opens its gates to you, all the people found in it will become forced labourers for you and serve you. However, if it does not make peace with you but wages war against you, lay siege to it. Deuteronomy 20:10-11
I never knew these verses were in the bible. I had, wrongfully, assumed that Gos had instructed the Israelites to kill all their enemies. I had struggled with it but understood as all the enemies in the territory they were moving into would corrupt the Israelites and water down their beliefs. Yet, when I think about it, these verses make sense. In other parts there is room for the foreigner wanting to join the Israelites as long as they adopted the Israeli practices.
In our country, and in many western cultures were are under pressure to make room for the foreigner and his culture. In some countries we are made feel bad if we dare stand up for Christian practices and celebrations such as Easter and Christmas. Perhaps we go too far. For if we went to eastern cultures we would need adapt just as in biblical times.
May The Lord give us wisdom and guide us on the right path. Amen!
