Jesus, Son of God

Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. In these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed Him heir of all things and made the universe through Him. The Son is the radiance of His glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. So He became higher in rank than the angels, just as the name He inherited is superior to theirs. Hebrews 1:1-4

Having just completed Romans and previous to that the Pentateuch (first 5 books of the bible), it is only fitting that I now study Hebrews, another favourite and one that ties the Old and New Testament together perfectly.

The author is considered to be writing a sermon, probably one he preached, hopefully, often. Although I like to think the Apostle Paul wrote it there are indications that he didn't, as little things, such as referring to Timothy as a brother, whereas Paul called him son and Paul claimed to hear the gospel by direct revelation from the Lord whereas this author says he heard it from the apostles. It doesn't matter really as it is a superb work.

The author loved the truth and loved the Lord. He understood that the old was writing about the new. He recognised that it was all about Jesus, the perfect high priest, the complete sacrifice.

In the remainder of the first chapter the author ties it all together beautifully, poetically. When I think of Jesus I think of song, praise, all the earth calling out, daily, His praise. He brings together Psalms, Numbers, 2 Samuel, Joshua, where do we not find our Lord?

As the plants unfurl and raise their limbs a song goes forth, as the breeze blows it whispers His name, the rivers sing merrily as they wander through the earth, the rocks shine forth their glory in praise, babies are born showing His perfection, animals, fish, birds reveal His beauty. He is good!

In verse 3 the author says: 'Jesus is the radiance of God's glory.' Radiance speaks of dazzling light, beauty. Jesus said He would come and live in us and that we are the light of the word. I just turned on my desk light so I could see better. If, when I switch on the light it fails, what do I do? Firstly I replace the bulb, then if it fails I replace the light. I have a job to do, as Brook Frazer says: 'I am handing out torches.'

If I fail in the place I have been designated, I will be replaced and lose a vital, beautiful connection. I have a job to do, you have a job to do. Are you batteries recharged?
