Keeping the Word
He gave Caleb son of Jephunneh the following portion among the descendants of Judah based on the Lord's instruction to Joshua: Kiriath-Arab (that is Hebron; Arba was the father of Anak). Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, descendants of Anak. From there he marched against the inhabitants of Debir whose name used to be Kiriath-sepher, and Caleb said, " I will give my daughter Achsah as a wife to the one who strikes down and captures Kiriath-sepher." So Othniel son of Caleb's brother, Kenaz, captured it, and Caleb gave his daughter Achsah to him as a wife. When she arrived, she pursuaded Othniel to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What do you want?" She replied, "Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give the springs of water also." So he gave her the upper and lower springs. Joshua 15:13-19
Caleb not only said he would rid his land of the giants, he did it. In this passage we see how clever he was at finding a champion. He promised his daughter's hand in marriage to the man who would take the fourth town.
It is important that we end as well or better than when we start. This life is not about us but those around us and those coming behind.
We see his daughter Achsah not backwards in coming forward in asking for her own inheritance. She is behaving like her father. Go girl!
The first judge was Othniel and may well have been this man.(Judges 3:9-11)
The future king David went out from Hebron and also offered a reward to the person who succeeded in defeating the enemy. (2Samuel 5:6-15). Caleb was instrumental in establishing the future.
What a good and godly inheritance. Today I see my grandchildren who I have not seen for six months. I am looking forward to seeing those who I am creating a future for. Righteousness establishes a nation, a city, a family. Amen!
