First Place Please
Jesus called them over and said to them, " you know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them. But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give His life- a ransom for many." Mark 10:42-45
After all this time of being with Jesus the disciples did not get the fact that Jesus was not like other leaders, He did not lord it over them, yet James and John were asking Jesus for first place in heaven. Jesus had to tell them that this was not something He had charge over. The places beside Him in glory were already allotted by the Father.
When the other disciples heard of the request they became indignant. When we take on airs or imagine we are of more worth than we are, we are proud and therefore in line for humbling. Jesus was trying to help the disciples have a humble attitude am not need the fall.
Jesus never strived to exalt Himself, and neither should we. It is He who exalts us, at the right time. All things work together for our good. We must trust The Lord at being Lord, He does it better than anyone I know. Amen!
