Power Over Deafness
Again, leaving the region of Tyre. He went by the way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of Decapolis. They brought to Him a deaf man who also had a speech difficulty, and begged Jesus to lay His hand on him. So He took him away from the crowd privately. After putting His fingers in the man's ears and spitting, He touched His tongue. Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed deeply, and said to him, "Ephpharha!" (That is, Be opened!) immediately his ears were opened!) immediately his ears were opened, his speech difficulty removed, and he began to speak clearly. Then He ordered them to tell no one, but the more He would order them, the more they would proclaim it.
They were extremely astonished and said, He has done everything well! He even makes deaf people hear, and people unable to speak talk!" Mark 7:31-37
Decapolis was where the demoniac came from, Jesus had a reputation here. The fact that the crowd said: "He does everything well," shows a previous history. Perhaps this region had a problem with demons and deaf mutes, perhaps they were more open because of the deliverance of the demoniac, I know I would have been.
The act if sighing deeply after looking to heaven is perhaps evident of Jesus knowing the true state of the man and His compassion was moved.
When we move in the Spirit and receive a word of knowledge about an individual, and catch the heart of the Father, we
are moved to compassion.
Again and again Jesus shows compassion. He took this man aside privately, perhaps he was a timid, hurt man who had been bullied and abused. The fact that his tongue was tied indicates he made some noise but could not speak coherently. If you cannot hear you do not know language. People like this are often the brunt of jokes and bullying.
This passage makes me love my Lord more, He is good, even if He spits on His hands before healing me, He is welcome!
