The Cost of Discipleship
Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, "If anyone wants to be My follower he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his life? What can a man give in exchange for his life? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." Mark 8:34-38
Isn't it interesting that Jesus called the time in which He lived, 'an evil and adulterous generation.' Is it possible that things never change just the surroundings and look is what changed?
I would say that this description is that of the modern society we live in. Yet obviously we share that name with previous generations.
Jesus now presses His hearers with the cost of being His disciple. Living for Him requires us to lay down our own desires and passions and take up His.
What does that look like? For me I continually have to go the Him with requests for my time that I am unsure of. He alone knows how me being in a certain place, at a certain time will bring His presence closer to those He wants to touch. I must allow Him to be Lord. Amen!
