Appearing Wise They Became Fools

Some Saducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and questioned Him: "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaves his wife behind, and leaves no chid, his brother should take the wife and produce offspring for his brother. There were seven brothers. The first took the wife, and dying left no offspring. The second also took her, and he died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. So the seven left no offspring. Last of all, the woman died too. In the resurrection, when they rise, whose wife will she be, since the seven had married her?"
Jesus told them, " Are you not deceived because you don't know the Scriptures or the power of God?" For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the Angels in heaven. Now concerning the dead being raised- haven't you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the buring bush, how God spoke to him: "I am the God of Abraham and the God of Issac and the God of Jacob?" He is not the God of the dead but of the living. You are badly deceived." Mark 12:18-27

How foolish to try are deceive Jesus! The Saducees did not believe in the resurrection and tried to make a fool of Jesus. All they succeeded in doing was making themselves look foolish. How arrogant!

Jesus knew the scripture and had truth within Him. The Saducees obviously did not know the scripture and did not have truth within. Jesus summed it up rightly when He said: "You are badly deceived."

Trying to appear clever has dire consequences. By becoming puffed up in their own imaginations the Saducees lost out in an opportunity to have a living relationship with their Saviour. Not a good trade!

Don't fall in love with heady knowledge which appears smart but is leading you away from Jesus, wrong track. Jesus said we must have childlike faith. Jesus knew the scriptures but kept His faith undefiled by self-righteous arrogance. He was God, we could do well to learn from Him. Amen!
