They came to the hill country of Ephraim as far as the home of Micah and spent the night there. While they were near Micah's home, they recognized the speech of the young Levite. So they went over to him and asked, "Who brought you here? What is keeping you here? What are you doing in this place? What is keeping you here? He told them what Micah had done for him and that he had hired him as priest. Then they said to him, "Please inquire of God so se will know if we have a successful journey."
The priest told them, "Go in peace. The Lord is watching over the journey you are going on." Judges 18:1-6
The tribe of Dan had been allotted land by Joshua and been able to capture two cities but not the rest. They had now decided to find land for themselves. Sending out spies, much the same as the original spies sent out by Moses. Yet here were men doing as they saw fit.
They come upon a young Levite and ask three very good questions:
Who brought you here?
What are you doing in this place?
What is keeping you here?
Unfortunately they were not spiritually in tune and the answer given satisfied them. The young Levite told them he was working for hire, something Levites did not do, especially not in an idolatrous house.
They then, foolishly, ask the Levite to inquire from The Lord regarding their mission. He does not inquire of the Lord but speaks out of himself.
The Danites again, foolishly, accept his response.
When we are away from God we accept rubbish as if it is from God. When you have tasted the goodness of God it is hard to forget, but when you have tasted the rubbish of man, just because he bears a title, you are deceived.
Do not live away from God, He is the only source of life, truth and peace. Amen!
